Loss of body strength due to penance is seen directly; by observing one we can find out whether a particular person has done penance or not. Due to penance, one’s body may be depleted but not the mind. His face shines like moonlight. A man of austerity is good-natured – practitioner of virtues. Moksha (liberation) is possible through restraining of desires
Four followers (sravakas)
चत्तारि समणोवासगा-अद्दागसमाणे,
पडागसमाणे, ठाणुसमाणे, खरकंटगसमाणे
पडागसमाणे, ठाणुसमाणे, खरकंटगसमाणे
Devotees are of four kinds: like a mirror (of pure heart), like a flag (with a fickle mind), like a stump (perverted) and like a thorn (abusive)
Age is depleting
सेणे जह वट्टयं हरे, एवं आउखयंमि तुट्टइ
As the hawk kills the quail in one stroke, so also after completion of age, death takes away life
An opportunity for self improvement
अत्तहियं खु दुहेण लब्भइ
An opportunity for self-improvement is got with difficulty
