With form or formless

नो इन्दियग्गेज्झ अमुत्तभावा,
अमुत्तभावा वि य होइ निच्चं

Formless realities like soul etc. cannot be apprehended by senses and those which are formless are eternal

कसाया अग्गिणो वुत्ता,
सुयसीलतवो जलं

If passions are fire, then scriptures, celibacy and austerity are called water

Anger, pride, deceit and greed – they are four passions. Like fire, they burn the soul – are the cause of its being restless and annoying. How to escape from them? This has been told through this maxim. If the house is on fire, then it is extinguished by water. Be humble

Be humble

माणं मद्दवया जिणे

Overcome the pride with modesty

Storm uproots big large trees but can do no harm to the grass spread over the earth. Why is this so? Trees keep standing in their arrogance whereas grass is humble i.e. it has humility. Because of arrogance, trees are uprooted whereas due to meekness grass remain as it is. It shows the path to the conceited people as to how they should behave. Continue reading “Be humble” »

Pure, free and forbearing

सारदसलिलं इव सुद्धहियया,
विहग इव विप्पमुक्का,
वसुंधरा इव सव्वफासविसहा

Hearts of Sadhus are as pure as the water of a river in autumn. Like the bird, they are free of bondage and like the earth, they endure all pleasures and pain with equanimity

During rainy days, the color of the water of the river, which looks like the color of tea or coffee because of mud mixing, becomes pure in autumn. Sadhus hearts are also pure like that. They are without the dirt of passions. Continue reading “Pure, free and forbearing” »
