Take no interest in enmity

वैराइं कुव्वइ वेरो,
तओ वेरेहिं रज्जति

An enemy nurtures enmity and takes interest only in that

Blood spot is not washed by blood. It can be washed by water. Similarly, enmity cannot be overcome by enmity. That can be won through peace, forgiveness, forbearance, love. However, some persons are such that they want to conquer enmity with enmity. Such people want to extinguish fire by kerosene, not through water. What sort of foolishness is this? Pain and desire

दुक्खं हयं जस्स न होइ मोहो,
मोहो हओ जस्स न होइ तण्हा

Who is detached, his pain is destroyed; who has no desire, his attachment is extinct

Desires vanquish even men of exemplary fortitude they make men of vision blind. As a man with eyesight cannot see things around him in the darkness of night; likewise, a covetous man does not see the wealth he possesses instead he desires for getting more and more – throughout the life, he struggles like a bull. Neither satisfaction, nor contentment

देवावि सइंदगा न तित्तिं न तुट्ठिं उवलभन्ति

Gods (devatas including Indras, their chief, who live in the heavens) also are neither satisfied nor contented with sense gratification

There are five organs of senses and their objects are different. Throughout life, man runs after acquisition of these objects. सुयसीलतवो जलं

If passions are fire, then scriptures, celibacy and austerity are called water

Anger, pride, deceit and greed – they are four passions. Like fire, they burn the soul – are the cause of its being restless and annoying. How to escape from them? This has been told through this maxim. If the house is on fire, then it is extinguished by water.
