Be friendly

मेत्तिं भूएसु कप्पए

Be friendly with all living beings

Anger, pride, deceit and greed – these four passions make the soul sulky, restless; not only this, but against whom these are used they also become sullen and restive. They become our enemy because of show of our passions and keep the enmity alive. In response, we also nurture hostility against them and thus, this antagonism becomes stronger and stronger. Take no interest in enmity

वैराइं कुव्वइ वेरो,
तओ वेरेहिं रज्जति

An enemy nurtures enmity and takes interest only in that

Blood spot is not washed by blood. It can be washed by water. Similarly, enmity cannot be overcome by enmity. That can be won through peace, forgiveness, forbearance, love. However, some persons are such that they want to conquer enmity with enmity. Such people want to extinguish fire by kerosene, not through water. What sort of foolishness is this? Do not lick the spitted

से मइमं परिय मा य हु लालं पच्चासी

Wise aspirant should not lick the spitted i.e. not desire those which have been renounced

When with open eyes an aspirant sees that in this world after sense gratification people become sick, call on the doctors and pay their hefty bills and still are not able to get rid of diseases completely; one after another disease strikes them, then they get a little mentally disgruntled. If in this position, he is fortunate to listen to the saints who have renounced the world, then he may also forsake the sensuous objects and accept the life of an ascetic. Extinction of accumulated karma

तुट्टन्ति पावकम्माणि
नवं कम्ममकुव्वओ

One who does not bind new karma, his past karma are annihilated

Whatever we eat does not go out through the doors of the body organs. Some of it goes out as rejects and some sticks to the intestines and what is absorbed there produces many sicknesses. Health consultants say that we should give rest to the stomach once in a week through fasting. When new intakes do not go in the stomach then deposited dirt will also come out. Pure soul

भावणाजोगसुद्धप्पा जले णावा व आहिया

One whose soul is pure of thoughts, he is like a boat in the water

Speak not harshly

नो वयणं फरूसं वइज्जा

Speech is of two kinds – harsh and mild. In angry and cruel mood, it is crude; and mild when one is humble and quiet. Speech of kindness, compassion, sympathy, love, relations, affection, and deceit is mild. Against this, speech of cruelty, aversion, anger, haughtiness is discordant. न चित्ता तायए भासा
कुओ विज्जाणुसासणं

Ornamental languages can also not shield (one with misconduct from his lowly birth) then what can be said about intelligence

There is lot of difference between the knowledge of languages and discipline of education. One may know only one language, still he can be a scholar; someone else may know many languages, yet be a fool. Knowledge is not enhanced by knowledge of languages.
